Misunderstanding about roll and role of shock absorbers – Balancing sports driving and ride comfort-

There are many misunderstandings about the sport of a car.

Low vehicle ride-height, aerodynamic parts, high grip tires, lightweight aluminum wheels and inch up, small diameter steering, metal pedals, wide tread, etc.

They are the image of a race car running on the circuit lightly and agilely.

I think that most of the manufacturer special tailoring which changed to the standard specification is image sales. This is because the standard specification is clearly superior in terms of "running".

The race car lowers the center of gravity for the stability of the car body.Lower the mounting position of heavy objects, such as engines, and change the geometric placement (geometry) of the suspension to lower the vehicle ride-height.

(Note: The ride-height down of the car with only the coil spring replacement increases the roll. This is because even if the center of gravity is low, the roll center goes down further. If you lower the center of gravity, it makes no sense if you do not change the undercarriage settings, such as the length and angle of the suspension arm. That's reason why the spring-rate of many commercially available downsprings is so high.)

Aerodynamic parts that get downforce are also effective in the speed range running the circuit.

For race cars with relatively little aerodynamic parts installed, apply a negative camber angle and focus on the tire grounding during cornering. In this case, the burden on the inside of the tire increases when going straight, so the setting is decided depending on the length of the race and the course.

As you know, you've tried a lot of camber-adjusted cars, but steering work for cars with large negative camber angles is very difficult and requires special driving skills.

All of these are special road surfaces with a large coefficient of friction that is neatly grounded, and are a method that pursues the speed of the car.

If you've ever run on a mountain slope next to an advanced driver who controls a well-set car, you'll know the real "sport" driving.

Driving actively uses a roll that is treated as something and a nuisance when cornering.

A mechanical grip with a roll is essential to bend the curve safely and stably on a mountain slope where downforce due to aerodynamic components is not expected.

Move the load on the wheel that was caused by braking just before the curve to the outer wheel of the curve by operating the handle and accelerator.

This driving technology, commonly referred to as load transfer, brings out the true grip of the tire.

The reason why rolls are disliked may be because there is a "jack-up phenomenon" in which the inner ring rises rather than the curve outer ring sinks.

However, if the coil spring or stabilizer is hardened so that the outer suspension does not shrink, roll suppression can be done, but the ride comfort is inevitable.

Even on a paved road, the intensity of irregularities and undulations is considerable, such as fences, fittings, manholes and caveats.

Auto manufactures have set appropriate road clearances and suspension strokes for commercial vehicles on the road.

Is it a sport to operate the steering wheel while imitating the race car, lowering the ride-height of the car, putting up with the ride that seems to bite the tongue, and being at the mercy of unstable behavior in a car that has a hard spring?

The most important thing is to learn basic driving skills, but if you change the car side, you should start with a shock absorber. It may simply be that the shock absorber is degraded or originally incompetent.

For many shock absorbers, the damping force is set to the erudition side greater than the shrink side.It follows the irregularities of the road surface and has the effect of suppressing the expansion of the inner suspension when passing the curve.

By replacing (changing) the shock absorber without changing the coil spring or stabilizer, you will feel little unpleasant roll, and the ride comfort of uneven passage of the road surface will be much better.

This is KYB Ultra SR sold in Europe.

Made IN JAPAN's high-performance shock absorber. In the genuine shape, the damping force is strong and fixed.

Unfortunately, there is no demand or distribution in Japan where we manufacture.
